The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona in 2011, according to the latest data validated ( Environmental Data 2011 ) have generated 1,507,496 tons of municipal waste, or put another way, an average of 1, 29 kg per day.

Despite the downward trend of recent years, most of the public is not yet aware of the volume of waste generated, and usually once deposited into different containers is unaware of the fate and subsequent treatment, as well as its cost.

This was the conclusion drawn from the preliminary work on the project Life COR. In October 2008, the Environmental ( WITH today) commissioned a study to better understand the values, attitudes and habits of the target audience in relation to domestic waste and its management, and its determining factors in the Institute of Regional and Metropolitan (IERMB):Determinants of domestic waste management in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. Attitudes and positioning before the separation and separate collection . "

In the discussion groups created to draft the study it was clear that when asked by major environmental problems, the citizens do not mention the waste. And when they do, they usually associate them with civility problems or cleaning.

This fact and the persistent circulation of rumors and urban legends about the futility of separating different types of waste at home because after all they go to the same place, or why eliminates jobs, affecting the credibility of the system and are a limiting factor for the increase in selective collections.
