The different waste treatment facilities of the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (Environmental Entity), -storage depots, selection plants, composting plants, ecoparks, landfills, voluminous articles treatment plants- pursue common objectives:
- Maximizing the possibilities for recycling and recovery of municipal waste.
- Reducing the remainder fraction. Priority is given to a more sustainable process that enhances the recovery and re-use, which reduces the amount of waste that receives final treatment.
- Obtaining a rational and uniform distribution of facilities throughout the territory, in order to minimize waste streams and also minimize the environmental impact of treatment through fuel savings and other resources.

Landfills : facilities where waste that can not be recovered and the remainder of treatment plants are deposited under environmental safety conditions. |
Composting plants: plants that treat the selectively collected organic matter through a biological process to generate an organic fertilizer, the compost. |
Selection p lants: facilities that separate different materials from waste using manual, mechanical, magnetic and other kind of processes. |
Voluminous articles treatment plants: storage and/or large volume waste treatment facilities, such as waste from electrical and electronic equipment or furniture. |
Energy recovery plants: incinerators where the energy and steam produced are re-used to generate electricity and supply air conditioning systems. |
Restoration with compacted waste: restoring operations with compacted waste under environmental safety conditions. |
C losed: in 2006 the landfill in Vall d'en Joan was closed, one of the most emblematic metropolitan facilities. |
Plants of transfer: temporary storage plants to optimize transport to recycling plants or endpoints. |
